Lavender R. Ray papers, 1791-1954 (bulk 1850-1916).

Letters, diaries, account books, and legal documents, created by Ray, his father and brother (both John Ray), his grandfather George M. Lavender, a Floyd Co., GA, settler who traded with the Cherokee Indians, and his brother-in-law Joseph J. Felder. Other correspondents are: Alfred H. Colquitt, Joseph E. Brown, and Hoke Smith. Some of the records cover Lavender Ray's service in the 1st Regiment GA Vols. and the 1st Regiment GA Cavalry. There are photographs of Ray and his home in Newnan and of Alexander H. Stephens (autographed) and a scrapbook of more letters and photographs. Include are his 1891 dental records.

Lavender R. Ray was born and lived most of his life in Newnan, Coweta Co., GA. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Over the objections of his parents, he volunteered for service in Company A, 1st Georgia Regt. Vols., and saw action as a private in Stonewall Jackson's Corps.
